Trombone/Trombone mouthpiece for tubist

Question
I just bought a used Bach 42 Strativarius (no F attatchment) and was wondering what mouthpiece I should think about purchasing for this horn. I have played the tuba for years using a Conn Helleberg, but have very little experience on a trombone. I thought about buying a Bobo mouthpiece, but figured that it might not sound just right and certainly could limit my growth in proficeincy on the instrument.
I would like to know why I might purchase one size or type of mouthpiece over other options.

Answer
John,

Whenever I've started a new instrument, I've always tried to find out what most players would consider "middle of the road" for that instrument.  For trombone, I'd put my money into a 6.5 AL if I were you.  There really isn't any advantage to going with a larger mouthpiece when moving from a larger to a smaller instrument, or with any other considerations for that matter.

Once you've put some time in on the horn, you may learn a little more about your physical tendencies to make a better educated decision about different mouthpieces.  Until that happens, use a 6.5 AL.  It's a great starting point that will fit that horn well.  You already know there is a world of mouthpiece options out there, and it always ultimately comes down to a personal preference.

Good luck with the trombone, and check back if you have any other questions.
