Question
What is a Coil?

Answer
Coil spring or the electromagnet kind?
They call it a coil because there is a iron core with copper wiring wrapped(coiled) around it and when electricity is run through the wire it makes a magnet. This is how a starter solenoid works. An ignition coil does about the same thing except they collaps the electric feild rapidly creating the high voltage for the spark plugs. This is the simple explanation and not the scientific one
