Truck Repair - cummins engine cuts off

Expert: Waheed Shittu - 5/12/2009

Question
Dear Waheed

My computer switched off before l concluded, I have a cummins n14 truck, it runs for a short while and if l try to rev it cuts off. I have changed filters, blown the pipes to the tank but the problem still persists.I have noticed that the fuel will be low in the filter when it cuts off. My gauges are all fine and this engine is a 1996 non celect. I need your help.

Answer
Hi, Wilson, Did this problem start after changing the filters? If so, you may need to check the following:
1. Is the fuel filter original fleetguard or proven alternatives.
2. The 'o' seal on top of filter ok and not twisted.
3. Did you overtighten or undertighten the fuel filter.
4. Did you fill up the fuel filter with correct diesel fuel prior to fixing it.
5. Did you notice any fuel leakage on the fuel inlet pipe or return pipe.
6. If you have a check valve on the fuel line, check that it opens in the direction of arrow etched on it.
If all the above have been confirmed ok,
Then it is highly likely that your PT fuel pump gear pump is worn out and needs replacement and recalibration of PT pump.
Hope these can resolve your problem.
Regards,
