Trumpet - Value of a Holton Collegiate Trumpet

Expert: Mike Pawul - 10/29/2009

Question
First, thanks for the help and assistance.  My son, now 42, was given a Holton Collegiate Trumpet to practive/learn to play the trumpet.  Never did, liked drums.  The trumpet is in pretty good condition. One very tiny dent in the front. Also, it appears that the brass is coming off in a couple of places!!!...IS THIS POSSILBE... WAS THE INSTRUMENT MADE WITH A FINE COMVERING OF BRASS or is this just dirth??? On one of the valves, it has the number 49990 ... I'm not sure what this is..a serial number I would think ... was put there by the company.  Trumpet was made in Elkhorn, Wis.
Any idea of the value of the Trumpet or a value range?
Thanks for your expertise and advise,
Jim Chambers

Answer
Jim, First I would say the brass is not coming off. Those horns were coated with a gold colored lacquer and that will deteriorate with time. Many times it will flake off after several years in storage. If that serial number is correct it dates the horn to 1921. I have seen several Collegiate horns in the late 1920's but that would be one of the oldest I have heard of. The value is determined by the condition of the finish, wear to the valves, and when and where you sell it. A range for the Collegiate line is $75-200.
