About Mike Pawul
Expertise I am familiar with most trumpets, cornets, and flugelhorns. I can answer most questions about playing and musicality. Best of all, if I can't answer it directly I play regularly in five bands and have several "old timers" that are familiar with most things that I am not. I collect, repair, and refinish old horns and have sold over 350 with more than 230 on ebay
Experience I have played since 1965 and studied with many directors and trumpeters. I have been collecting since 2002 and have over 150 horns in my personal collection. I have done repair and refinsh since 2003 and have done over 500 horns.

Trumpet - Want to upgrade

Question What do you suggest I buy for my Middle School child? I have
a $1,000 budget and want something of superior quality. He has played for years and his beginner instrument is unreliable.
Answer Hello, There are several good horns that you can upgrade to that are in that range. If you get used you can even find pro horns in that range. For new horns check out Eastman ETR520, Blessing ML-1, Getzen 700S, and the Bach TR200. Used horns you can find a Bach Stradavarius, Yamaha 63XX, Older Benge (any model), Older King Silver Flair or Super 20, Holton T101, or a host of other pro models. The best solution is try to find a store with several models and let him play each. You go and listen to the sound from the audience side. Then you two compare sounds and prices and see what feels and sounds the best to you. Make it a fun experience because you don't get a new horn very often!
