Question I play trumpet and I am in jazz band and on a piece that we play I have a solo that is to be improvised. What do the chords mean on the solo part and how do I use the chords in a solo?
Answer How Duane,
Chords really relate to particular Scales in Improvising
For Example if the Chords Says G7 You can play all the notes of the G Scale
with the 7th note being Down a 1/2 Step(So you'd play F Natural as opposed to F#)
F7 Chord Would be all the Notes of F Scale with the E now being Eb
There is a great Album out by Jamie Abersold Called Scales and Chords-This would
help greatly in learning to Improvise
You might want to see if there is a College Professor or Jazz Student that could
give you some lessons
Sincerely
