Expertise
I am familiar with most trumpets, cornets, and flugelhorns. I can answer most questions about playing and musicality. Best of all, if I can't answer it directly I play regularly in five bands and have several "old timers" that are familiar with most things that I am not. I collect, repair, and refinish old horns and have sold over 350 with more than 230 on ebay

Experience
I have played since 1965 and studied with many directors and trumpeters. I have been collecting since 2002 and have over 150 horns in my personal collection. I have done repair and refinsh since 2003 and have done over 500 horns.

Question
My daughter currently is playing/renting the JupiterXL CTR60. I really want to buy her a trumpet instead of renting to own as you pay 6 times more then what it's worth. Learned that lesson the hard way from my other daughter playing the Saxophone. This is her 1st year playing and I am clueless on trumpet. Any suggestions on which to buy? I don't want to pay a lot either, not yet. Any info. is so greatly appreciated.

Answer
Shennondoah, It is true that rentals cost much more. But they do allow students to quit if they are not going to continue playing without you getting stuck with the horn. I have seen some newer horns that are pretty decent for the money. Bach has the TR500 that is a pretty good horn for the money. Blessing has just started a new line that is imported for them and First Act is actually a fairly decent horn for the money. Of course, you can find a good deal on used horns that will be better than the cheaper new ones. If you go the used route look for an older King 600, Olds Ambassador, or Conn Director. They will all play as well, or better, and last longer than the cheaper new horns.
