AboutMike Pawul Expertise I am familiar with most trumpets, cornets, and flugelhorns. I can answer most questions about playing and musicality. Best of all, if I can't answer it directly I play regularly in five bands and have several "old timers" that are familiar with most things that I am not. I collect, repair, and refinish old horns and have sold over 350 with more than 230 on ebay
Experience I have played since 1965 and studied with many directors and trumpeters. I have been collecting since 2002 and have over 150 horns in my personal collection. I have done repair and refinsh since 2003 and have done over 500 horns.

Question Hello. I'm a swiss man and have received a trumpet from the windband of the village. Productname is STARLINE, made in England by Rudall Carte & Co. Ltd. Londonan the number of production is 11766. I can playing with it but the pistons ar a little be damaged. Can you tell me, how old is this trumpet and is it the worth to restore by a instrument maker? Many thanks in advance.
Josef Schlegel
Answer Josef, Rudall was the oldest maker in the UK. They started as Rudall Rose Carte and Co in about 1780. It became Rudall Carte in 1872. The company was bought by Boosey and Hawkes during WWII. Your horn should date to the period right around 1900. There isn't any information left on the lines but I believe your horn is a low pro model. I also think it is a cornet and not a trumpet since you say "small" trumpet. It might have some value to a collector but not much otherwise. Since Rudall didn't make their own brass instruments it was most likely made by Boosey. Being rare I would have it fixed if the cost isn't expensive. Otherwise it would make a great conversation piece.
