Trumpet/1946 Olds Trumpet

Question
Hi Mike. I recently inherited my dad's Olds trumpet. He bought it on July 16, 1946 - shortly after he returned from the war. (I only know this because the case still includes the original sales paperwork, all mutes, custom mouthpieces, oil, and various other items.) He was a soloist in a big band days and played opposite the major stars as they came through Southern Ontario. But in the early 50's he gave it up to get married and start a family. He put his trumpet in a closet and there it has stayed until now. Well, I'm a guitarist not a trumpet player so while it does have HUGE sentimental value, I can't help thinking that a horn like this should be in the hands of someone who would actually PLAY it.

Question: Any idea how best to put this on the market - and if so, how much I should ask for it? Thanks so much in advance.

Answer
Wray, The value depends on what model it is, the condition of the horn including the valves, and where and when you sell it. I would love to see some pictures and could then tell you more. But without seeing it and knowing what model it is I can only give you a broad range on worth. That range would be $50-700 based on the above factors. The best place to list it would be Ebay since it draws the most attention. Unless it is a top pro model then Trumpet Herald or Trumpet Master would be better. Expertise

I am familiar with most trumpets, cornets, and flugelhorns. I can answer most questions about playing and musicality. Best of all, if I can't answer it directly I play regularly in several bands and have many "old timers" that are familiar with most things that I am not. I collect, repair, and refinish old horns and have sold over 600 with more than 400 on ebay

Experience

I have played since 1965 and studied with many directors and trumpeters. I have been collecting since 2002 and have over 150 horns in my personal collection. I have done repair and refinsh since 2003 and have done work on over 900 horns.
