Question Hello. We're searching for a trumpet for our 5th grade son; he's played only for one year on a rental. We just located a real deal on a Getzen Eterna 700 in awesome shape, realizing this is more of an intermediate trumpet are there any concerns for using this for a beginner (e.g. size/weight, blowing resistance, etc)? Thank you!!
Answer Hi Mark~
Not knowing what kind of horn your son has been playing on until now, or the progress he's made over this past year, it would be hard to give definitive concerns in regards to the Getzen. If his progress has been good, I wouldn't hold any reservations about picking up the 700.
There isn't going to be a substantial difference in the weight or size, unless he's been playing a cornet his first year. The resistance could be different, but again, I don't know what kind of horn he's been playing on...it may be that he is ready for a more free blowing horn. I personally was playing a friends Olds Recording in my second year. The "larger pipes", if you will, were a much needed adjustment from my Bundy.
If you have the opportunity, I would let your son take a test run on this horn, or one similar...it's always a good idea to try 'em out. He may not be able to discern between the difference in tonal quality, or even know what resistance is, but he will know what feels good to him.
Getzen makes a fantastic horn, and this would be one that could service your son for years to come. I personally wouldn't hesitate in purchasing it if the condition vs. price situation is as you state. If you deem he's not ready for it now, it will be useful in a very short time.
