Turkey - Driving in Winter
Expert: Oguz Kosebalaban - 10/25/2009
Question We will be traveling in Turkey from Christmas Day until the 12th Jan. We are flying into Cappadocia just before the new year and were hoping to drive the following route: Goreme, Gaziantep, along the coast to Antalya, then Pamukkale then back to the coast to Izmir and up through Gallipoli and back into Istanbul. We do realise that this is an extensive distance, but were wondering if the driving in the eastern part of our trip would be feasible, especially between Kayseri and Gaziantep? We have 12 days to complete the drive. What do you think?
Answer Hi Rick;
Cappadocia is even more impressive in winter after snowfall when the formations are covered with snow. I advise this to visitors who especially plan to flying to Cappadocia.
For January there is a chance of having snowy days. While this is adding to the scenery and roads are kept clear in Cappadocia. Outside Cappadocia ; the road from Aksaray to Adana to Gaziantep is the famous main driveway through Turkey west (to Central Turkey then South) to east ; so it is kept clear all the times : In case of snow, the cars should put on snow chains around the wheels according to traffic regulations of Turkey.
I drove in snow in Cappadocia a number of times and outside Cappadocia on the snowy surface ( although maintained ) of the road on the way to Ankara from Aksaray ( to North ) I saw cars that slipped outside the road; so one needs to be very careful; In short I will not recommend driving to Gaziantep yourself on a snowy road.
You have not spcified your reasons to make it to Gaziantep; maybe Gaziantep's incredible cuisine with its incredible museum housing the mozaics of Zeugma ; or else the mainstream route from Cappadocia to Antalya is through Konya ; because driving only from Adana to Antalya will be a torterous drive along the shore over the scenic curvy Tauros mountains with speed at places going down to 30 km/hour ; even some drivers and bus companies from Adana as a result go inland to Konya first and then drive to Antalya ( via Seydisehir ) .
Route planner :
http://mercedes.infotech.com.tr/rtext.asp?pid=ext_link:kw01-52:route_planner is a route planner :
baslangic is begins from
bitis is finishes at hesapla is calculate ( ignore the other values for gas etc ) and it gives you driving time and distance, but it works with turkish letters for some places for some special turkish letters like ş ç ğ ü ö
Enjoy your visit - Oguz
