Question Hi there, We are planning a 2 week trip in Turkey and would like to know the cost of petrol per litre and how much an average cafe lunch would cost. I understand city prices would be different to country but would like an indicative price. Also is the Old City Sultanahmet a safe area to stay in as we will have a toddler with us. Thanks
Answer Hi Larissa,
The cost of petrol in Turkey is rather high - 3.20 lira approx per litre. Use a currency convertor for the currency you need to understand the relevent cost.
As for cafe lunches they can vary significantly and you can find relatively cheap meals for a few lira - chicken doner 3 lira , gozleme 3 lira pp etc . However you can also spend around 10 lira ppand more on a more sunstantial meal.Drinks like Cola etc are around 2 lira and coffee is 3-6 lira depending on the area. Sultanahmetin Istanbul can be expensive for eating as it is a tourist area so head for the side streets where the locals eat rather than the main street that caters for tourists . Local eateries are great, safe and much more atmospheric.
Sultanahmet is a perfectly safe area to stay and the only issue will be all the positive attention your toddler will recieve! Turks love children and will think nothing of picking them up, kissing and cuddling them and of course feeding them lots of chocolate etc all without your permission. Its a wonderful culture to travel with kids as long as you leave some of your rules etc at home for the duration of your visit . If you are relaxed with your child you will find them a great introduction to a side of Turkish culture that is just wonderful .
I hope you enjoy your visit to Turkey .
