U.S. History - Conflicts in American History

Question
Hi Mr. Patty!

I am writing a research paper based on a quote from the book The Thirteen
Arguements. The quote is: "Conflict is built into the very landscape of our
country, and into the character of the people who inhabit it." We have to assess
the validity of the statement and provide extensive examples to support an
individual, unique thesis.

Now, if I had it my way, I would just talk about the evolution of political
parties and their benefits. However, the paper needs to be 4-6 pages in length,
and the question wants more than one example. I am trying to write this paper,
but I am drawing blanks as to what else I should use to support my arguement
that will match the importance of political paries.

I really need some help here, and I look forward to your suggestions.

Answer
Sidney,

The conflict has sometimes been violent, so I would look at the history of war in the US.  In particular, you might look at the years leading up to the Civil War and the treatment of Native Americans (through intimidation and violence) throughout the 1800s.

Good luck on your paper.

Best,
Joshua Patty
