Question
What were some of the best ways to make a living in the West during the mid 1800s.

Answer
There were many ways to make money.  Some of the richest men of that era made their fortunes through land speculation, particularly in coordination with the railroads.  Merchants who able to get western goods to markets in the east and manufactured goods out west also tended to do very well.
