Maryland actually passed a religious tolerance act stating that all people that believed in the divinity of Christ was free of persecution, excluding Jews and Atheists but still tolerant for the day in age. Rhode Island was founded on the principal of religious tolerance and freedoms because Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island, was exiled from his Puritan community for deviating from the Puritan's strict religious code.
