U.S. History - transcontinental railroads and transportation in the 1800s

Expert: Daniel Hogan - 9/21/2007

Question
QUESTION: I don't know if you can help me, but I can't seem to find anything anywhere about the prices of transportation in 1880. (or at least around that time.) I have an on-demand writing piece that I'm writing about what a trip would be like to travel from Kentucky to California in 1880.

ANSWER: Here is a good article on passenger railroads in the 19th century. The price paid by passengers depended on what class and accomodations they wanted to buy. Also, passenger accomodations were constantly changing as new technology and amenities were being added to passenger rail cars.

QUESTION: the link that you gave me didn't work.
the box that came up gave me an option to go to the hsp home page, but i can't figure out where to go from there.

Answer
http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:2GT1zeHmY00J:www.hsp.org/files/studentreadin...

This is the actual url copied from the page the article is written on.
If this doesn't work, try google and type in the search box: 19th century railroad passenger prices.

The  web site says "19th-Century Life on the Rails: A Microcosm of American Society"

This is how I found it.
