Question
I haven't followed the war in Iraq very much but my friends have been talking about it a lot, so I would like to learn more. What caused the war in Iraq? Was there tension between the countries before 9/11?  Are we making progress over there? Are we fighting with Iran too? I just would like some background on the war.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi,
No this problem was not new post 9/11.
In 1990 Saddam invaded Kuwait
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuwait
It resulted in the Persian Gulf War
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_War
At the end of hostilities there were terms of a
ceasefire that were agreeded to by Saddam.
Saddam never complied with the ceasefire terms.
17 UN resolutions and years later the US attacked Iraq to remove Saddam.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/09/20020912-1.html
There were no fly zones.
Iraq was shooting at US and British planes.
http://archives.cnn.com/2001/US/07/25/iraq.attack/index.html

Saddam was also suppposed to cooperate with UN weapons inspections, which he did not.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_and_weapons_of_mass_destruction

In addition he was the 3rd largest state sponsor of terrorism.

http://www.state.gov/s/ct/rls/crt/2000/2441.htm
One thing he was doing was paying the families of Suicide
Bombers $25,000 in Isreal.
(25K is 5-10 years of income there)

In terms of progress yes the mass murdering stopped.
Saddam killed 78 people a day for 20 years.
There is democratic constitution and government.
They had elections. The Kurds in Northern Iraq have peace and prosparity.
The Baath Party resistence was defeated.
Unfortunately Iran and Al Quidia stoked sectarian violence
Iran supporting Shiite militias while Al Quidia supported
Sunni insergents. Al Quidia was defeated in Afganistan and
shifted its efforts to Iraq.

Iran has been fighting a proxy war against the USA since
1979. They took our Embassy and held our staff hostage for 444 days. There has been a embargo against Iran since.
They used Hezbolla to kill Americans Marines on peace keeping mission in Lebanon. They Harbor Al Quidia and harbor and train terrorts acting against Isreal.

Feel free to ask follow ups.

btw
Insergencies like in Iraq can take a long time.
The USA had a similar problem post Spanish American
War in the Philipines from 1900 to 1912.
