Expert: Paul Edward Zukowski Date: 9/1/2007 Subject: how to place an issue onto House agenda
Question Dear Paul... I am interested in repealing the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act. It appears to be up for renewal yearly. I would like to approach my Representative, Sarbanes about this issue. How do I make this proposal attractive for him to listen to me ? For example, I have many connections to the timber industry in Burma. This timber is currently harvested mostly by Chinese businesses and sent primarily to companies like IKEA. And though sanctions on Burma are imposed by the U.S., we still purchase IKEA items ( from Burma ). Of course, I am a good U.S. citizen and supporter of Democracy. However, I do not support sanctions. How do I combine politics with business ? How do groups as AIPAC influence lawmakers to support their ideas ? I have relatives who are in the Burmese ruling "junta" and they are receptive to engagement with the U.S., but need some incentive. How do I show Rep. Sarbanes that my plan will be effective and rewarding for any interested partys. Thank you.
This is similar to embargo against Cuba and the embargo that was against South Africa. This is a statement of US Forgien Policy. How this gets repealed is the Military Junta goes out of power and there be free and fair elections. Isreal Lobby only works because its a liberal democracy who have similar values to USA.
Plus many American citizens live in Isreal.
The terms to get this repealed are stated here. http://usinfo.state.gov/eap/Archive/2004/Jun/29-245979.html
It states
"Benchmarks for lifting the ban on Burmese products would include: "releasing all political prisoners; allowing freedom of speech and the press; allowing freedom of association; and permitting the peaceful exercise of religion."
99% support in both chambers of Congress and a President in support; there nothing you can do to change this.
You have attempt to overcome efforts of the Human Rights lobby that documented the abuses in Burma.
