U.S. Virgin Islands - Pet transportation from San Juan to St Thomas

Expert: Susie Rano - 1/20/2009

Question
I am moving to St Thomas VI soon.  I have been trying to find transportation from San Juan to St Thomas for my 70lb Border Collie.  I am running into deadends and running out of time.  Also, when I am on the island, I have a need to travel back to the states for a few days once a month and am looking for pet care during my absence?

Answer
Hi Katherine-  I can only think of contacting the airlines and also try Seaborne Airlines.  Seaborne #340-773-6442.  Or you can try the ferry service which goes between St.Thomas and Fajardo- 340-776-6282.  I believe when you travel with a pet, you need to have him/her checked out by a vet.  I think it's like 24-48 hours just prior to traveling.  You should contact your vet to verify this.  Lastly, some of the vets have cages for boarding an animal while owners are away.  As for pet sitters, I believe there is only one listed in the phone book, I don't know what he charges. Paul's Pampered Pooch- 340-344-3399.

I keep thinking to start my own pet sitting biz since there seems to be a real need for this.  I even have a name for it- "Beastie Butlers."  I don't like to board my animals when I leave, either.  Anyway, good luck Katherine- I hope this helps.

Respectfully,
Susan
