Question QUESTION: Greetings:
As an ex USVI resident, I am considering moving back. I have credit problems on the mainland and wonder if I can start fresh in the VI with my old credit history?
Thank you,
Bill
ANSWER: Greetings Bill-
Unfortunately your credit history will follow you no matter where you go. Sorry. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide.

QUESTION: Thank you:
I am a bit confused, sorry. Several years ago I purchased an auto in the VI (as a resident) and when a credit report was checked only my local reports showed. Have things changed that much? Do banks automatically check the three major bureaus?
Thank you very much. I have been rated you the highest possible.
Respectfully,
Bill
ANSWER: I'm not sure I understand exactly what you need to know. If you owe money in the mainland, you will still owe it here. Whomever you owe to, will eventually find you, should you either apply for a loan/lease/apt. of any kind. Or if you get a job on the books, they will find you. Also, if you get a checking or savings account here, they will track you down. I hope this helps. You can try posing your question on www.vimovingcenter.com. They have very active message boards and someone may know the answer to this better than me.
Thanks and best of luck to you.

QUESTION: Thank you again:
I am not worried about anyone tracking me down for unpaid bills. I simply wish to know IF I were to apply for a loan, as a resident of the USVI for many years, would my stateside credit profile automatically be checked?
I am a good citizen and hope business practices are conducted in the same fashion as 10 years ago? In a nut-shell, I have maintained USVI residency since 1974 and hope the 3 major credit reporting agencies are not contacted as a standard business practice should I apply for a new mortgage in the VI.
Thank you so much for your efforts. I hope I have not been a burden.
Regards,
Bill
Answer You certainly have NOT been a burden at all, Bill. With the economy being as it currently is, many banks are quite nervous to hand out mortgages these days. It is for this reason that I would not be surprised if they do run a thorough credit check before offering you a mortgage. I'm no expert in that field so just take my answer with a grain of salt. Hopefully I'm wrong. Good luck again! I hope you get the mortgage or loan you seek.
