U.S. Virgin Islands - Moving to St Thomas

Expert: Susie Rano - 2/19/2009

Question
I am very interested in moving to STT but understand it is nearly impossible to secure a job unless you are either on island visiting for a while or have actually relocated to the island. Is this true? I'm looking to make a life change and have always loved tropical climates close to the water.

Answer
Hi Connie-

I do not want to discourage you but please realize that due to the current economy, I think it is difficult for anyone to acquire a job these days, no matter where you live.  Here on the island, there are very few jobs listed in the newspaper on any given day.  Also, some companies may be concerned about how long a person has lived on the island, prior to hiring them.  We do tend to get quite a lot of transients.  People that come to the islands feeling they will be here for the rest of their lives,(or at least a few years),  only to leave a few months later. This said, the only jobs that seem to consistently appear in the paper, is for experienced jewelry sales.  If you have experience in that, you should be in luck.

I highly suggest you check out www.vimovingcenter.com.  They feature a lot of helpful advice for those wishing to relocate to the islands here.  Also, they have a very active message board so you may want to post some questions over there too.  Best of luck to you.

Respectfully,
Susan
