U.S. Virgin Islands - Fishing equipment and info

Question
Hi Susie,

I'm leaving saturday for maho bay on St. John for a couple months. I love to fish but won't be able to travel with any equipment. I'll be on a budget and won't be traveling from island to island too frequently once I arrive at maho.

Do you know of a store to get a cheap fishing rod and some basic equipment near the airport in STT or anywhere on St. John?

Any other info you may have on fishing (what lures, bait to use, what's biting this time a year etc.) is greatly appreciated!

I was also wondering if a light pair of pants and long sleeved shirt would be completely useless or maybe comforting on a windy night?

Answer
Hi Pete-  The only place on St.Thomas that you would be able to buy inexpensive fishing gear, would be at KMart.  You would need to take a taxi from the airport to either the smaller KMart or the larger KMart located at the Tutu Park Mall. The larger KMart would probably have a better selection.  You should also check with the regulations on fishing in St.John.  I'm not very familiar, but know there are some regulatons, especially in St.John.  Perhaps you could contact the DPNR at 340-693-8735.  Or try the National Park Service in Maho Bay- 340-715-4180.  I'm sure between the two #'s, someone should be able to either help you, or offer you contact info for someone that can help.

As for the clothing, it can get a bit chilly at night, so packing a light pait of pants with a long sleeved shirt or bring a light sweater.  For more help with the fishing, you might want to check out www.vimovingcenter.com.  They have a very active message board so you can post your questions there.  I'm sure someone from St.John will be on the board to help.

Hope this helps you.  Take care and have a great time in St.John.  Let me know of you need anything else.

Regards,
Susie
