Question
Hi,
I'm going on a cruise to these 3 spots at the end of March. My girlfriend and I have been snorkeling just twice before and would like to do lots more on this trip. We have our own equipment. Can you recommend good, safe beaches for snorkeling?  We especially enjoy out of the way coves where there aren't too many crowds--though last time we snorkeled in Bermuda our stuff was stolen off the beach. I've heard taking a ferry to St. John is also recommended. Any advice you have is much appreciated.
Thanks!

Answer
Unless you have a layover on St. Thomas, you will not have enought time to go to St. John. If you do have a layover, then by all means - go to St. John. The waters there are awesome and you can do some great snorkeling on some quiet beaches. Take your choice of beaches there.

As for a single day on St. Thomas, I would choose Coqui beach where Coral World is. They feed the fish there and it keeps the fish friendly and a huge variety of species. The water is clear to the bottom which can be 20-30 feet along the cliffs. It probably won't be too private, but the snorkeling is the best on the island. If you have a day or two there, make sure you rent a 4-wheel drive. There are lots of beaches along the coast that are quiet with very few people. The jeep will make those 'islander beaches' more accessible. Take a look at my website under beaches:

If there are others on the beach (such as Coqui), just ask your neighbor if they would keep an eye on your stuff. You'll be surprised that they probably won't mind.

Hope you enjoy yourself. If you have more questions, let me know.

Fran
