Subject: Diesel Escort cuts out when driving

Question
I have a Ford Escort TDX turbo diesel (1993) which cuts out at any time while driving. It has happened immediately after starting, and after driving for miles. One day it did it every few yards! I have changed the fuel filter which seemed to cure it but it's back. It's a bit hairy when your engine dies in the overtaking lane! Any suggestions please?

Answer
Hi Bob. Don't you just hate it when that happens! Back to basics here , look for the obvious first which you have done with the filter. Myself in the w/shop would feed the fuel injector pump directly from a little gallon container,as you need to start eliminating bits of the system so lets start with the most expensive one! bosch fuel system , no hand primer to go wrong . Lucas system , hand primer with rubber disphragm that can allow air in. Start introducing bits of your fuel system into play and see if the fault ocurs. Possibility of somthing in the tank. Most commonest fault I found was the tank breather situated under drivers rear wheel arch blocked , causing a vacum , but then on lucas system the h/primer would usually pull down on it's own and give game away.
Other end of the scale is how does it cut out , is it like turning the key off? If so then you need to be looking at the shut of solenoid situated at the injector pipe end of either pump. Or possibly a bad connection to the solenoid. Way to prove a point , remove solenoid 15/16 AF 22mm and remove plunger and spring , re fit solenoid and have to stall engine to stop. if fault does not occur you know which direction to go. Thats about it really , trial and error i am afraid.
good luck and give me a shout if necc.
