Question Hi Tony,
My father has recently purchased a mondeo TD to which we have found a fault. When we started the car on the first morning it struggled so we applied additional heat. He then drove somewhere, upon his arrival back we found that the tickover was irratic, hunting, and blowing out excessive smoke (blue) from exhaust. It looks as though it has recently had a new pump fitted, the one with the manual push button. Someone said it was pulling in air from somewhere. We took the car to a so called deisel engine expert who said he would try a clear tube for the fuel to see what was happening, when he called for us to collect the car and pay we found the car doing exactly the same, obviosly the mechanic just shrugged his shoulders, but i refused to pay. Have you any idea what we could try without going to a garage again.
Best regards,
Mike.
Answer Hi Mike , turn ignition on to heat only, you should hear a rapid clicking for about 5 secs. if not the advance control solenoid is faulty. Classic symptoms are those you described. this is expensive item and should only be fitted by someone with a fuel injection knowledge.
this answer is based on the earlier turbo 1.8 diesels the later electronic ones are beyond my experience.
It is possible that air can cause this also , which is where a descent mechanic could have diagnosed, unfortunately not in this instance.
Take care
Tony
