Question
Tony i took your advice and fitted a clear hose,
yes it is air it the fuel.
i noticed that it seems to happen when there is 1/4 of a tank or less.

The fuel system is (from the book)... a bosch vp-30 conbined lift and injection pump, chain driven from crankshaft. direct injection via five-hole, pencil type injectors, electronic pump control unit (PCU) linked to revised EEC-V engine management powertrain control module (PCM)

Tony, can you shed any light on how the air is getting in?

Many thanks
Mark

Hi Tony
I have a ford courier tddi (wreg 2000).
It has an intermittet fault. sometimes out of the blue it starts lacking power, the power comes and goes in surges and it has stalled a few times when ive tried to pull away, when ive eventally got it home and switched it off overnight, the next day its fine? ive changed the fuel and air filter. can you shed any light on this problem?
also theres a squeak coming from the engine that only sounded in wet weather but now its all the time, and info would be aprieciated.

Sounds like either air in system ( which can be difficult to prove ) or a vacum occuring in tank, possibly because tank vent is blocked. usually located top of o/s/rear wheel arch. air in system can be determined by using clear plastic pipe between pump and filter. Need to know the fuel system i.e. bosch lucas ? difficult one here need more info, but likelyhood is that it will require process of elimination to solve power fault, as far as squeak maybe slack fan belt?
regards
Tony

Answer
Thanks for getting back Mark, 1st ensure that you do not undo the injector pipes on this vehicle ever. Extremely high pressure than normal diesels. Possibly your stack pipe in tank is broken , worn , corroded etc, not reaching bottom of tank. If you have used plastic pipe just between pump and filter, try it on tank side of filter as well, if air goes then it is filter unit, if not just work back , suggest putting plastic pipe on stack pipe and connect to fuel line as well. This is def an air prob as you know so it is just elimination. Slight pin hole will cause severe probs.
Take care now
Tony
