Expert: Tony Edwards Date: 2/10/2005 Subject: Mondeo diesel problem
Question I have a 1995 1.8 turbo diesel Mondeo with a genuine 97K on the clock. It is reasonably well serviced (fluids and filters, belts etc). Recently it has started to cut out completely or threaten to cut out (revs drop to below 500rpm),if I declutch to change gear while braking. Tickover is also a bit erratic. This happens both hot and cold, and the engine restarts ok. I have noticed the car is a bit smokey if I accelerate hard and its a bit heavier on fuel than usual. I wondered if the injectors might need serviced or replaced? It uses some oil but I think its leaking it rather than burning it (crankshaft end seals), but I can live with that. Any ideas would be greately appreciated. Thanks. Andy Knight
Answer Hi Andy apologies for delay.
First thing here if possible you should try to feed fuel directly into injector pump from CLEAN container. this will tell you if fault is on fuel lines, i.e. air in system, blockage in pipes etc. then gradually introduce the system back in bit by bit, unfortunately you will need bits & pieces of pipe for this but it is only way to avoid spending cash on things you do not need. You dont say if it is bosch or lucas system but they are both going to give probs with air. If you have diaphragm on top of filter it is usually Lucas system, no primer usually bosch.H primer is favourite fault which is why you need to by pass things first. So basically if it runs ok with direct feed , eliminate pump and injectors , if not get pump tested. Hope this helps, Tony
