Question
I have a Vauxhall Astra 1.7 Diesel 1993, which is getting rather long in the tooth.  It has done 109,000 miles and the top end speed, as you can appreciate, has dropped.  If I replace the injectors will this improve the speed or should I be looking at replacing other parts?  It is so reliable that I am reluctant to replace the whole car just yet.
Thanks in anticipation.

Nigel

Answer
Hi there Nigel , you are not wrong in saying the car is getting long in the tooth. You don't say what your top end speed is , injectors are there purely to spray the diesel into the combustion chambers , if it is not sprayed in corect form , pressure or time then it can affect the vehicle. If your injectors are original then yes you would see "some" improvment such as better fuel economy/acceleration but top end speed is covered by other things like fuel supply from tank, air in system , timing, governor settings etc. etc. Why not get your injectors tested if possible before spending on them . Most places will not charge you for that if you remove them your self . But if they are ok make sure you get new seating washers and ensure that the seats in the head are clean after removing the old ones. Even now I could knock a set up for around £20 each so that is the recon price and in some cases , new , that you should be looking for. You say that it is reliable so that tells me there is no bad start probs. Fuel pumps do wear out but usually large style as in not starting / running properly. A good service can produce a result also.
good luck
Tony
