Question
QUESTION: Hello!

I have started having problem with my recently purchased Clio. It is a Y Reg, 01-05, 1.4L dynamique + model.

Having bought the car about 3 or 4 months ago the ECU light (coil light) has started to come on randomly. When this happens the engine automatically revs at 2000 rpm. If I try and accelerate I get nothing and if I lift off I still get 2000 rpm. Also, the exhaust gas warning light has now come on with the ECU light.

At one point I was on the M1 and it happened. I was limited at 40mph with some traffic coming past at 80. I obviously pulled over. After restarting the engine it was fine again for another day.

I was wondering if you had heard of a problem like this before or if you haven't have any ideas about what it could be?

Many Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Oliver, it sounds like the EGR (exhaust gas recycling) valve. around about £90 to buy. hope it helps you - let me know - Paul

QUESTION: Hello again,

Thanks for your quick response. I forgot to mention before that the coil light comes on and the problem happens when I go over 50 or 60 mph.

I was just wondering what the EGR valve did and where it is located?

Thank You

Answer
Hey Oliver, the EGR valve recirculates exhaust gas back round to the engine through the intake manifold, the exhaust gas has unburnt fuel in it called HC or hydrocarbons, this gas is re-burnt making the exhaust gas cleaner when it comes out the tailpipe. I am not too sure where it is located on a clio but usually if you follow the pipe/tube from the exhaust manifold it will lead to the valve.

keep me posted - Paul
