Subject: IE6 Browser infecectd - how to clean up

Question
I recently took out a (paid, cheap) registration with a sports company which basically hooks me up with some live sports stream feeds (soccer actually).  It works reasonably well, however, in the signup process, one or more of the linked sites has now forced some automated hyperlinks into my browser and I cannot get rid of them (I am not really blaming the paid company, but believe one of their links caused it)

It does not seem to be malicious other than forced advertising but it is very annoying and time-wasting to have to kill each of 3 or 4 processes which start up.

If I load the IE6 browser without the internet connected nothing ever happens, but as soon as I log on to the web some process fires up several sites and some of those repeatedly reload  even after I kill them.  If that was not bad enough, all the infecting sites are Chinese so I have no idea what they are saying! I always now seem to have 4 or Chinese pages open in my XP Pro system

I have looked around at the browser and other XP processes, even the registry (I am a software developer).  I did find a couple of these links in the registry and managed to erase those, but some unwanted pages still do reload all the time

I have tried all I can but am not very familiar with the inner workings of the IE6 browser - can you help.  Even registry keys to review / delete would help me

I have cleaned my system with 3 different spyware cleaners,
but those have not helped

Thanks

(frustrated)

Answer
Firstly try upgrading to Internet Explorer 7, it does tend to clear out most spyware and adware from IE6. Thats available from www.microsoft.com/ie

Secondly, I recommend you try using Spybot Search and Destroy as there are add ons to disable 3rd party tools in IE. Thats available from www.safernetworking.com ...
Also Microsoft's Windows Defender is very good as it knows what your supposed to and not supposed to have. Thats available from www.microsoft.com/windowsdefender

And Thirdly and finally, if you go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs you can find any strange looking programs and try and remove them. This sometimes works.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Sascha Lopez.
