Subject: Wireless Internet access in London

Question
Hello,

I currently am renting, and don't have phone-access for my desktop PC, so have no Internet. I'm currently using Internet cafes in order to use the Internet, therefore. I've heard of new generation WIFI technology which allows laptop users to log on to the Internet at specific cafes/restaurants, but my desktop PC can hardly be carried all the way to the nearest cafe. What I was wondering was if you knew of any new technology which will allow even desktop PC users such as myself, without phone-access to be able to connect to the Internet via various wireless methods. Presumably you'd need a mast in each area to send out signals or whatever.

Thanks
Geoff

Answer
Hi Geoff

There is only a few ways i know to do this.

You can connect to the Internet via a mobile phone attached to your laptop wireless connection.

I'm not sure about how much this costs or how to set this service up but it works usually with wifi technology.

Thats how business folk surf the web on airplanes and trains etc they hold there mobile phones near there laptops and the infa red or bluetooth port on the mobile makes the connection thats the most i know about it.

You might be able to do the same thing with a PC instead of using a laptop but im not sure.

There are satellite modems you can use which don't use a telephone line however you need a telephone line to setup the account but you could get a friend to do this for you. I am not sure how much these cost they might be expensive.

Also you can surf the internet with your television under some satellite TV packages and cable TV packages.

Hope that helps I'm sorry i don't know much about this area thats the best i can offer.
