Question
hi craig
i have a wired broadband setup with virgin. i want to be able to share the connection with two other people who live in the house. if i use wireless for them, can i stay wired and what do we need and how do i set it up, so that there is no connection between the computers,
can you help?
can you use little words that i can understand?

Answer
Hi Mick

It would be a lot easier to make the whole house wireless.

You can make it a mix between wired and wireless but it makes things a little bit tricky.

I think you would need both a wireless and wired modem connected to the same master PC I have never tried to do this but they may clash with each other.

I suggest going wireless with all the PC's as it makes things far more simple and less likely to cause network problems.

To go Wireless first find out what wireless modems Virgin allow you to use some companies prefer you use there own modems or they have a list of modems they want you to use. Some let you use ever modem they might want you to use a modem that Virgin makes.

Most wireless modems work like this:

1. Install the modem/router into the master PC that's the one that is the leader or the head of the house hold's computer.

One end goes into your computer and the other end will go into your phone line socket via a filter. you probably already seen these filters because you have a wired network.

2. Then you put signal catchers in ever computer you want to be able to access the Internet. Basically there like a little box with an Ariel in them and they usually plug into the usb slot that's the kinda long thin rectangular type plugs.

usually you get them with your modem/router however you might need to buy more if you have lots of PC's. I think they give you 4 in most packs.

3. Next you run the setup programs for the modem/router and the signal catches. Usually you run the setup for the signal catchers on all the PC's you want to use the Internet apart from the master computer instead you install the modem /router program on this one.

4. Once its installed it will probably ask you for a network key. All routers have unique keys this is to make sure you can't connect to you next door's network accidentally. You should find the key on the modem / router box it looks a bit like a bar code from the supermarket it should be on a sticker if its not there then it may be on the instruction manual.

Once you have entered this on all the PC's it should connect your network and everyone can surf at the same time.  You might need to setup some security things before hand such as a password or a firewall but just do what the setup asks you and you should be fine.

hope that helps good luck with installing your network.

from Craig
