Subject: drinking age in restaurants

Question
Hi, could you please give me any information on the minimum drinking age with a meal in a restaurant in England. Can a person 16 years of age purchase an alcoholic beverage for his/herself with the meal, or does it have to be purchased by an adult.

Answer
Chris
I only deal with Scottish law, but, as far as I know, English law in these circumstances is pretty similar.

In Scotland you can buy cider, beer, perry or porter to drink with a meal in a licensed restaurant if the licensee agrees.  You can drink wine with your meal, but you can't buy it.

In England you can buy cider or beer to drink with a meal in a licensed restaurant if the licensee agrees.
