Ubuntu and Associated Distributions/mount my HDD to my ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Dear John,

I'm new to UBUNTU 14.04

I plug in an external HDD 1.0TB to my desktop
It shows up nothing at all

I looked up from a few forum guiding how to using sudo commands in the terminal, but looks quite complicated, and also not sure if doing something wrong will making a mess of my Ubuntu 14.04

I was wishing if you can gives me some help on this?

I hereby gives you a little bit background of my Desktop PC and also my knowledge background on computer

[ Desktop PC ]
* DELL Inspiron 660s (pre-installed w/ Win 7 Home)
* 1 year ago I replaces the HDD with a Plextor 128GB SSD

[ My IT knowledge ]
* using only Windows OS since win 3.1 until Win 7
* knows some ASP PHP JScrip coding
* that is all, so not too much in depth about computer system things :P

Run this from a command-line prompt:
# dmesg

immediately after plugging in the USB connector.  This will tell you if plugging it in was even noticed and what events were triggered.  Hypothetically, if you see a reference to something that begins with '/dev/', the string that follows '/dev' will be one or more partitions.

Some distros configure /udev to automatically mount a drive plugged into a USB port.  You can see what's mounted by running the command:
# mount

# df

Running the above will return the size, space used, available space and mount options that are in effect.
