Question I have been communicating with an online pen pal that is from Uganda and i was just wondering what their traditional language is and how it compares to English. The reason why is because some of the things he says in e-mails I can barely understand. I just thought you may know a little more, its fine if you're not sure though. THANKS!
Answer Hi sarah
English in Africa is always a second or third language as they will speak their local dialect then maybe Swahili which is an East African language. Everyone should learn English at school but not everyone can afford to go to school or if they do may only do a few years.
Their local language is nothing like English and it depends on which part of Uganda he lives to know which dialect he will speak.
You must remember a foreign language is much more diffiuclt to write than to speak so be patient with him. He will love being able to practice his English with you.
