Question I have a half pint pewter tankard stamped underneath Gaskell and Chambers Birmingham Marde in England. My question is about what I assume are wieghts and measures marks on the side. There is a cartouche with a crown over GR over 6 and then, as individual stampings which look like they've been done at different times, 52, 56, 57, 58, 59. Are these annual checks on the volume and do they refer to the years 1952 etc? thanks in anticipation
Answer -
Well done with your research so far - all correct! 6 is the UV number for Birmingham (see the Verification Marks page on my website for more info), GR being the regnal cypher for King George - probably George VI given the check dates.
