Subject: old pewter jug

Question
Dear Martin,
I am hoping you can help me with some information on an old pewter jug.It is about 5" high and about 4" in diameter at the base,it is hallmarked just under the lip with large caps about 1/4" high. The hallmark is as follows, inside a shield are the lettersJS ,then inside another shield is a X with two small dots one either side of the X,then inside another shield {different shape to the previous} are the letters MG.
Thankyou for your time
Regards
Ross Pentreath

Made by John Somers in Brazil, where he was making reproduction forms in the late 20th Century. Some of his pieces are very good copies indeed of early types. He closed his Brazil business in the year 2000. So I'm afraid your jug is not very old at all.

Somers trained with a traditional English pewtering firm in the 1960s and 70s.
