I can't speak for Chernihiv per se, but having been to Kiev just 2 months ago and Odessa, I can say that my experience of Ukrainians, as a tourist by myself, was very positive. I witnessed zero negative responses or people who appeared apprehensive/mistrusting, etc. Instead, I was treated hospitably and got to meet and talk to several for in depth conversations w/o ever knowing them. Several in Kiev walked me to the location I was searching for, several blocks at times, chatting, smiling and being friendly. Very open and I can't wait to go back to other places besides Kiev and possibly Odessa again. Great people.
