Question
what kind of reception can expect from the locals in Odessa i plan on going tier for a few days of r&r i am an american who works in the middle east and is their any cultural misunderstandings  that i should watch for that i might not know about as a american

Answer
You should be fine.  Ukrainian culture is not terribly unlike American culture and a lot of the the no-nos they will forgive you for because you're American.  And most younger Ukrainians tend to think they are silly anyway.  But, some things to not do: whistle indoors (brings bad luck), shake hands over a threshold, walk between two people walking together, wear shoes in the home, sit at the corner of a table, give someone an even number of flowers or leave a bottle on the table once it is empty.  There are dozens more, but no one expects you to know them.  Odessa, particularly, has a reputation for being cosmopolitain and laid back.
