Question
My daughter has a new Ukrainian student in her class (in Connecticut, USA) and wants to make him feel welcome---is there anything that's particularly nice or comforting to a Ukranian 11 year old boy to make him feel welcome? He doesn't speak English, and is probably a nervous wreck...Tre

Answer
That is a good question.  Ukrainians often greet newcomers to a country with gifts of bread and salt and he would probably appreciate the gesture and know your daughter took the time to learn at least one of the customs of his country.  Chocolate is a common gift given between people in Ukraine and your daughter couldn't go wrong by bringing him some on other days.  Otherwise, taking the time to be his friend and being patient with his English is an international way to get to know someone from another country.  As someone who had to learn another language in a foreign country, I can attest that most people don't have the patience to have a conversation with someone struggling to find words, and he would no doubt appreciate someone to practice with.
