Question Hi Brian, I have a computer that I had built, and run windows xp home basic with 2 hard drives internal and 2 external usb storage hard drives I use these for photos that I take when on holidays,
What I wanted to do is upgrade my computer and wanted to know if I bought a new unit say for example a duo core - I think this is what it is - could I just install my current 2 internal drives and connect my usb devices and wireless card that operates on a small home wireless network and will everything just work as normal but give me the benefit of new hardware, or is it not that simple, or even if I bought a new mother board with CPU and installed that in my current box?
Thanks a million
Vernon
Answer Hi Vernon
It's possible to do, yes...but it's also not that simple. The first problem that arises is booting conflicts. Windows is looking for one motherboard and cpu, but finds this new one instead. It's loading up drivers for the old configuration. You can see where this can lead to all sorts of stability problems. Also, Windows itself will need to be activated by Microsoft in order to run on a new machine. The license, they will tell you, is only good for one machine, and you may be required to purchase another license.
I believe that a better way to go is to have the new machine working (with a fresh copy of Windows), then add your old hardware one device at a time to make sure everything is stable. Your old boot drive can simply be used as another storage device, but you will still have access to your old documents (most programs will need to be reinstalled, however). If you have any more questions, I'd be happy to help. Good luck.
