Question QUESTION: hi brian
windows media player no longer auto starts when i insert a cd or plug my phone in to download my pics. It used to auto detect a device and give me the option to choose what i would like to do, ie burn a disc, play a cd, download pics from a portabl devise.
regards chris
ANSWER: Hi Christine
Double click on My Computer. Right click your CD drive, and click on Properties. Go to the Auto Play tab and click Select and action to Perform. Here is where you Will pick the program to play your CD (the default for music is usually Media Player, but you can pick another if you want). Now click Apply, and OK. Restart your computer and the next time you insert a CD in the player, it should play automatically.

QUESTION: hi Brian
sorry to be a pain but i have followed your instructions and it still isn't working. windows used to automatically pop up and ask what i wanted to do, ie, download pics, burn a cd, play music. i just can not understand why the programme no longer runs.
ANSWER: Hi Christine
You're not a pain at all. I'm sorry I did not understand the problem fully. I need to know which version of Media Player you have. Open the player and click on the Help menu, then scroll down to where it says About Media Player (or something similar). Let me know what version you have.

Answer Hi Christine
I have been searching around for a solution. I believe that you just need to tell windows to prompt you when a device is inserted. The solution is similar to the one I gave prior. Double click on My Computer. Now choose a drive, such as the cd drive, or your phone if it is plugged in to the computer, and right click on the icon. Choose properties, then the AutoPlay tab. In the drop-down box, you can select a content type, then make sure that the button is checked where it says 'Prompt me each time to choose an action, then click Apply. Do the same thing for all the other content types and other drives. Alternatively, you can choose Restore Defaults. This should change everything back to prompting for action. Fingers crossed, I hope this fixes it. Let me know.
