Subject: Hearing On Appointment

Question
Hey, I just got a nomination to both USNA and USMA. I am also an officially qualified candidate for both. Does this mean I will hear from the academies ON April 15th or BY April 15th? All the sites say by April 15th, but it doesn't really clarify if that means before on actually on the date of April 15th. I have all my stuff done, does that mean I will hear from them soon?

Answer
Matthew,
If I understand your question correctly that means you have received your nomination from Congressman, Senator, or other qualified official.  You say you are also a qualified candidate which means you have completed the application and are in mental/physical shape to attend.

If this is all true, then the next step is to receive and appointment.  Once you receive an appointment to an academy, that means you are officially accepted to become a midshipman or cadet.

All qualified candidates will go through a nominations board.  They started convening late 2007.  They meet very regularly and get word out almost weekly.  You could hear at any time whether or not you received an appointment.

Most people do receive their appointments by April 15, however candidates will also still receive them after this time too.  Basically, each academy has to fill a specified number of "seats" in each entering class.  If an appointee turns down their appointment, that opens up a seat.  People who are wait-listed (that isn't the term they use), will start receive appointments at that point.  I have heard of people receive calls in June saying they have a week to get to the Academy if they still want to go.

I know that this doesn't make your waiting any easier, however if you received your nomination already and are qualified, you should be fine.  Getting this all done early can really help you gain an earlier appointment.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck...and GO NAVY SINK ARMY!
Eric
