Question I am a sophomore in high school, and I am thinking about joining the academy. I am in the top 10 of my class and participate in a lot of extracurricular activities. I want to go to the academy for engineering and to serve my country, but I am worried about how long I have to serve after my school years are up, can you tell me how long I would have to serve.
Answer Corey,
Your minimum obligation to server (OBLISERV) is 5 years. This would be 5 years upon your graduation. Depending on what you select to do in the navy/marine corps, your obligation could go up to 7 years or more. However, the basic obligation is 5 years.
Think about this though...
It's 5 years of practical and valuable experience in the workplace. You will have a great job with great benefits. Trust me, I wanted to do my minimum and get out, but I stayed in for 9 years after graduation. The first couple years went by very slowly, but that last ones FLEW by!
