Question
I am a junior in High School and have been interested in the Naval Academy for some time now, however, the answers I've received on vision screening and corrective surgery tend to contradict one another. I recently read this article on Midshipmen vision correction

http://www.usaeyes.org/lasik/library/navy-prk-fighter-pilots.htm

Does it still hold true today?

Answer
Ken,
Thank you for writing about this.  Corrective surgery for Midshipman has been a hot topic in years past.  I know that when I was at the Academy, Midshipmen were not allowed to get corrective eye surgery.  However, ROTC Midshipmen were able to.

I will be honest and say that I don't know what the current rules and regulations are for Midshipmen and Midshipmen Candidates.  I tried calling the USNA Admissions Office.  Unfortunately they were closed for the day.

I recommend you call the USNA Admissions Officer personally to ask your question to the experts.  They will have the most current information and can track down specific issues.  Their number is (410) 293-4361.

I don't mean to make you contact someone else, but I think they are the true experts that can help you out.

Best of luck!  Go Navy!
Eric
