Question
Hello MR.Shangle I am a freshman in high school and have been interested in the academy since 8th grade. I know that to be competative I must been smart, physically fit, and must show leadership abilities. My probelm is high school math (algbra) is killing me. I have between 96's and 85's in all my classes except math. So how will that hurt my chances of being a midshipman. Also are their any other tips to help me.

Answer
Jonathan,
Don't sweat the small stuff right now.  Just concentrate on doing as best as possible.  Don't worry about the academy right now.  The admissions board looks at your SAT or ACT scores as a main discriminator.  Being that many schools across the nation have different standards, it's hard to compare them to each other.  The score you get on a standardized test will speak more than your grades.

That being said, I would try and learn as much math as you can.  Everyone is required to take Calculus I-III at the Naval Academy.  You can do it.  Everyone does.  It just might be more difficult for you.  Either way, you are only a freshman right now.  I suggest you enjoy your time in high school and just concentrate on being the best you can be.

As for tips, study for the SAT or ACT.  Start in your junior year sometime and maybe take a prep class.  At least buy a prep book.  This score does mean a lot really.

Best of luck.
Eric
