Question I am just about to start 9th grade and want to go to the Academy. I already play baseball and football, make good grades and am a group leader at church. What else do I speciifically need to be doing in 9th grade to be on the right track towards the Academy? Thanks.
Answer Nick,
Congratulations on already knowing what path you would like to take. The Naval Academy is an outstanding opportunity for school and for life.
Unfortunately there is not set checklist of things to do in order gain a nomination. The Academy truly is looking at the whole person and their leadership aptitude. What that means is that they are trying to figure out who will make the best future leaders for the Navy/Marine Corps, the government, and society.
I would say that your grades should be your primary focus no matter what. Sports and extra curricular activities are good, but you should seek out roles within these that show you are more than just someone who "belongs" to the club or team. Seek out opportunities where you can show that you make, made, or are making a difference. This is where you will set yourself apart.
Study for your SAT/ACT test. This is another area that provides a common denominator. If you and another applicant are equal in all areas, they are going to look at this score to make a decision.
In summary I will say this: Work on yourself as a total person. Think about what will help make you more attractive as a future leader. Concentrate on being good at a few things and being involved vice just belonging to everything.
I hope that this helps. There are also some programs that the Naval Academy offers to promote awareness. I would look into their Summer Seminar program. This is for high school students who are looking for a Naval Academy experience. Think summer camp with an Academy spin. Here is the link:
