About Kat
Expertise
I can help with anything from freshman/transfer admissions to financial aid, from coursework to campus life. I'm extremely familiar with the College of Liberal Arts, but I know a fair share about other colleges as well.

Experience
I'm a senior with a double major in English and Government, and I'm also completing the Liberal Arts Honors program.

Subject: UT Transfer

Question
I am a Texas resident and I applied to UT Austin's College of Liberal Arts. I am wanting to major in Economics but I am unsure if I will be admitted. I have a 3.2 GPA with 76 hrs. completed and I have all the courses required to transfer in. I also have an Associates of Science degree from the community college i currently attend. I was wondering if you knew how many transfer applicants UT accepts every semester and what the GPA cutoff is. This would give me a strong idea whether or not I even have a chance of getting in. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Paul,

Well I'm not an admissions counselor, so don't take my word as the absolute truth, but I can tell you what I know from my friends' experiences.

The College of Liberal Arts is generally the easiest school to get into at UT, so you've got that going for you. :) I know that Natural Sciences (one of the harder schools to get into) has a cutoff GPA of 3.2, so I would assume you are slightly above the cutoff for COLA. What would really help you, grade-wise, however is if you have mostly A's in classes related to economics (math, business, economics, etc). C's or B's in things like US History or Mythology aren't as important as an A in Intro to Economics.

Although it's notoriously hard to transfer into UT, they do try to reserve most of their space for Texas residents, so you also have that going for you. Beyond that, I really can't say very much more. I know that UT likes to know that you were involved in the community at your old school (so they know you'll get involved at UT), and if your essay says something besides "I just like Austin" you should do fine. (They get a LOT of applicants who want to come just because they like Austin, not necessarily UT.)

Your GPA and hours suggest you're pretty smart, so I would say your chances are pretty good. It usually just depends on how many qualified applicants they get each year and how much space they have for new students, and both can vary a lot. Keep your hopes up though!

Hope this helped!

Kat
