About Kat
Expertise
I can help with anything from freshman/transfer admissions to financial aid, from coursework to campus life. I'm extremely familiar with the College of Liberal Arts, but I know a fair share about other colleges as well.

Experience
I'm a senior with a double major in English and Government, and I'm also completing the Liberal Arts Honors program.

Subject: Transferring into UT

Question
Hi, my girlfriend is trying to transfer into UT and I was wondering if you could
tell me what kind of chance she had on getting in. She has a 3.58 GPA from
A&M, and 12 hours with a 4.0 coming from HCC (dual credit). She applied to
the Communication school with Education as her back up major. She is in a
sorority, has some service hours and things of that nature (not really sure
what they look at) and she had pretty good scores on her SAT and out of high
school. Any reply would be appreciated.
Thanks, Andrew

Answer
Hi Andrew,

Granted I'm not an admissions counselor so this isn't 100% fact, but I've had several friends transfer into UT and tell me about their experiences.

It sounds like she has a good shot, since Communications and Education are some of the easier schools to get into (compared to Natural Sciences or Engineering!) It also helps that she's from in-state (since UT has limits on out-of-state transfers.) I've heard that for Natural Sciences a 3.5 is almost guaranteed admission, so I'm sure a 3.6 for Comm/Ed is probably almost guaranteed as well. :)

As far as her extracurriculars, I'm not sure how much that factors in for transfers. Usually they just want to see proof that you've done well at your current school, and that your reason for wanting to transfer isn't that you failed all your classes!

I had one friend write her essay on how much she hated her current university, and she hated all her professors, and hated the town (and she had failed a few classes) - she didn't get in, obviously. I had another friend from the same university write about how she loved how small it was and had all these favorite professors, but it didn't have the resources she needed because it was so small and that was why she wanted a big school like UT - she got in.

I don't work for the admissions department, but I would say your girlfriend has a pretty darn good shot of being accepted. Also, tell her I said congratulations for coming to her senses and switching that hideous maroon to burnt orange! ;)
