Question Dear Kat,
I'm an incoming freshman for the new fall semester, and I was just wondering if it's ok for students to move in about a week before school starts. Are there any specific processes or set-ups that I have to go through in order to obtain my dorm key, and where should I get it? Do I have to sign in somewhere? If you could help me with these questions, I'd very much appreciate it! :D Thank you!
Answer If you haven't already, you should receive an information packet from DHFS (Department of Housing and Food Services) about the move in process. If you haven't yet, you should call them (512) 471 3136. There's more contact info available here: http://www.utexas.edu/student/housing/index.php?site=0&scode=0&id=285&menu=75
The packet should explain all of this information, or when you call DHFS they should be able to answer all of your questions. Even so, I'll go ahead and answer as much as I can.
The first thing you MUST do is schedule a check-in time. You can do that at this website, or you can find the link on the main DHFS website also: https://utdirect.utexas.edu/hfis/student/checkInAppt.WBX
The earliest you can check into your room is Aug 22, and even then you will be charged extra fees for each "additional" day you are in your room before the official check in begins on the 25th. You will pick a day and a time slot during which you will be given a parking pass so you're able to park closer to your dorm while moving in.
(Personally, I like to pick the extremely early or extremely late check-in times because instead of only 1 hour you get 5+ hours, and there are a LOT less people.)
When you arrive at UT to move in, you will have to check-in with a particular desk to receive your key and room information. The location depends on what time you choose. If you pick any time between 7 AM and 7 PM you will need to go to the Bass Concert Hall (PAC on UT maps). If you check in earlier or later than that, you will need to go to a specific location that depends on your dorm. (You will find out exactly which when you pick a check-in time.)
Once you check-in with a desk, you will get your key, parking permit, and a room evaluation form to fill out and return to your RA. (It lets you tell them if anything was broken or dirty when you got there so they don't charge you for it when you move out.)
